What is the aim of an OHSAS 18001 / ISO 14001 combined Internal Auditor training course?

Running for 14 hours over two consecutive days, our innovative Internal Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Auditor course equips participants with the knowledge and skills required to perform process audits of both Occupational Health and Safety, and Environmental Management Systems; either separately, or combined - as part of a more integrated System. We will help you understand how all this is done in accordance with the Auditing Guidelines of ISO 19,011.

Why should YOU attend this special budget and time-saving Internal Auditor course?

Have you been designated to carry out internal audits of your organisation’s Environmental and/or Health and Safety Management Systems? This training course can quickly get you up-to-speed on the two most in-demand International Standards that relate to your task: ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007. Your SQMC tutor will take you through each Standard (both are written in modern, ‘human-friendly’ terms) giving you a fantastic grounding in their clauses (which are designed to align with each other for ease of use), before explaining SQMC’s time-tested tips and techniques of conducting friendly and efficient, value-adding internal audits.

Or it could be that you’ll be involved in the design, implementation, and continual improvement of an Environmental or Health and Safety Management System (or both, as is increasingly common) - either as an employee, or an external consultant?

Maybe you’re the General or HSE Manager of such an organisation - you're due to be audited, and you're keen to learn exactly what to expect?!

A few more benefits – at a glance!
Our Internal Auditor course provides a valuable opportunity to learn or improve auditing techniques and practices.
We believe learning should be enjoyable! So we’re continually working hard behind the scenes to develop dynamic new practical exercises and group activities, to engage delegates in the course content and bring the subject to life.
Time flies! SQMC’s innovative classroom structures keep ‘lectures’ on theory to a minimum, and avoid ‘death by Powerpoint!’ (We give you extensive course notes, and optional print-outs of the most important slides.) In taking this approach, we free up more time for our enthusiastic Tutors to interact with you individually, and coach you towards your new skills goal.
We restrict our class sizes to ensure you receive that ‘personal touch’. It’s not uncommon for delegates to make new friends with each other, and especially their Tutor – who can be an especially valuable contact throughout your flourishing career.
Add Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points to your record, by participating in this SQMC programme.

Ron Rivans

Head of Training Division, SQMC.

Throughout the last decade, we developed this Internal HSE Auditor course, to meet the demand of certain clients who required staff trained in these areas, but on a tight budget and/or timescale. It certainly made sense to us, because a ‘hybrid’ course highlights the unique compatibility existing between the two Standards involved, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007.

Both Standards share many clauses which are similar in their demands and also share the same commonality with some of the clauses of ISO 9001:2008. This is helpful for companies who already have a Quality system based on 9001, who would like to operate an Integrated Management System embracing all three of the standards.

Delegates interested in either 18001 or 14001 are taken through the requirements of these two Standards, and shown where clause compatibility can be considered - and how it can reduce the duplication of procedure writing. Advantages are also obtained through examination of fewer procedures during the internal audits of companies who have implemented two or more systems.

Organisations who have implemented, or are in a position of implementing ISO 14001 and are seeking to train their staff as Internal Auditors, frequently find they are looking to implement OHSAS 18001 thereafter. This is very common as companies quickly see the benefits of 14001 registration, and are looking to manage their Health & Safety system more effectively; or are driven by supply chain pressures.

Those interested in 18001 will, similarly, learn when to implement and audit a 14001 Environmental Management System, as well as the 18001 system in which they are interested.

For these reasons, and due to popular demand, we made the decision in 2011 to offer this innovative 2-day Internal HSE Auditor programme on an open-to-public basis. Now self-employed Consultants and single delegates can take advantage and effectively get two training courses for the price and in the timescale of one!

For the more technically-minded – here’s an outline of the Programme

Delegates attending this combined Health, Safety and Environmental Management Systems training course take part in practical role-play scenarios, dynamic case-studies, and team work. SQMC Tutors encourage your questions – no matter how basic you may think they are – as part of a series of lively (not lengthy!) lectures. In only two days, you can learn, understand and appreciate all of the following:
The world-famous International Standard for designing and assessing Environmental procedures – ISO 14001; and it’s Occupational Health and Safety counterpart, OHSAS 18001.
You’ll be introduced to another important Environmental Standards in the 14001 'family': ISO 14004. You may encounter this when implementing an EMS.
The Requirements of Environmental and Health and Safety Management Systems, using the latest versions of ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 as your yardstick.
Getting to grips with Documentation and Interpretation.
Understand of the principles, methodology, preparation and performance of an Internal Audit, with ISO 19,011 (Integrated Management Systems) – the global Standard for Auditing Guidelines.
The key to selecting the Audit sample, and the subsequent preparation of checklists – get this right and you’ll perform Process Audits with increased confidence.
How to prepare the findings and statements for a Corrective Action Report.
Master the art of straightforward Audit Reporting, against an appropriate case study.
A look at Corrective & Preventive Action, the follow-up process, and then surveillance.

The central Standards that this training course is based on (ISO 14,001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007) provide both private and public organisations with useful models for managing and improving environmental impacts resulting from business operations. 14,001 and 18,001 also identify the internal audit process as a tool in the maintenance and continual improvement of an Environmental Management System (EMS) and/or Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS).

Also featured is ISO 19,011 – a universal Standard which provides guidelines for Quality and/or Environmental (plus other) Management Systems auditing.

A comprehensive Workbook is provided for class use and your future reference, plus a blank audit forms kit which you may copy and use for your own internal Health, Safety and Environmental Audits.

Qualification

As with some other cutting-edge training courses designed by the Scottish Quality Management Centre, there is not yet a formal specification provided by our governing body, the International Register of Certificated Auditor (IRCA), for us to register an HSE combined programme against. However, although not yet formally recognised by IRCA, our Technical Department have prudently designed this OHSAS 18001 / ISO 14001 Internal Auditor programme to the closest available spec’s of IRCA 2170 and 2120. Successful participants are awarded with a Certificate of Successful Completion, issued by the Scottish Quality Management Centre (IRCA approved training organisation: T.O. 3808), and may apply for CPD points from the Chartered Quality Institute.
